Searching For Items

To begin your search, type what you are looking for into the search box on the top of the page and then click the magnifying glass icon next to the box or click the return/enter key. Put your search term in quotes for best results, e.g. "IE TCD MS 11437/5/1/5", or "Book of Kells".

How To Refine Your Search

The search results are sorted by relevance. You can further refine your search by any of the faceted metadata on the left side of the search results screen. This includes Title, Type, Resource Type etc. Note that not all objects use all of the facets.

You can search for an exact phrase by putting it inside quotation marks. e.g. "Hardiman atlas" will return results with the exact phrase "Hardiman atlas". The search is not case sensitive.

While Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) will give you results, we recommend instead that you use + and - operators instead. These operators work best with the search ranking system.

+ means 'must have'; - means 'must not have', blank means 'may have'

For example:

If you search for +"Kells" +"28r" you will find only the objects that contain "Kells" AND "28r".

If you search for +"Kells" -"28r" you will find all objects containing "Kells" except those containing "28r"
