- Abstract
- IE TCD MS 4140 comprises a pencil sketch of the chamber music composition, 'Faith', an elegy for tenor, flute, harp and string quartet set to words by an airman from the Daily Telegraph, 16th January, 1941 by Ina Boyle. From IE TCD MS 4139, folio 1r is the following note about and including the words this composition is set to: "The elder of two brothers, both flight lieutenants, was killed on active service on Christmas Eve. The younger recently wrote home saying that while thinking of his brother, as he invariably did in the evenings, words suddenly framed themselves in his mind. He felt that he must write them down, which he did at once with scarcely a pause for thought. They are as follows - [Faith:] 'For my brother is gone hence, He has gone out into the great darkness Where no man shall point the way. But he will light there a lantern Which shall be a guide for me all the days of my life, So that I, following after, shall walk with a firm tread And the way will be made known to me, For that I did love my brother. And when I am come up with the light, Lo! it shall be for a meeting place, And there shall bean end to darkness, Only light, joy and the hand of my brother to raise me up.'"
