Abstract
  • Jean-Rodolphe Perronet’s 2 volume work ‘Description des projets et de la construction des ponts de Neuilly, de Mantes, d'Orléans & autres...’ Perronet (1708-1794) was a French engineer and writer, who first joined the administrative staff of the Corps des Ponts et Chausées in 1735 and worked as chief engineer at Alençon, mostly involved in road construction, from 1737 to 1747. He became head of the first French School of Engineering, the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées in 1747 and continued as director of the school until his death in 1794. Perronet was appointed Chief Engineer in 1763, and supervised all the works of the Corps des Ponts et Chaussées. ‘Description des projets et de la construction des ponts de Neuilly, de Mantes, d’Orléans’ is a treatise covering most of Perronet’s projects.
