  • IE TCD MS 28/1, a palimpsest of Gregory Nazianzen and Patristic miscellany, 13th century. Since before 1787 this manuscript, not then recorded in the catalogue except in so far as it is recorded as being borrowed by John Barrett, was referred to as (and recorded as being labelled on its spine) 'XYZ' or XZY. While the 'Z' was to be its symbol (or at least the symbol for its Matthew palimpsest folios) in the growing system of critical apparatus references to Greek New Testament manuscripts, used by eg Mill, Scholz, Bengel, Wettstein, Griesbach, Lachmann, Tregelles, Tischendorf, Gregory, Scrivener, (von Soden using a different system) and Kurt and Barbara Aland (Kurzgefasste Liste der griechischen Handschriften des Neuen Testaments - the numbers are usually referred to as Gregory or Gregory-Aland numbers - ) it is not clear if this is what is being referred to in 1787; on the spine of MS 28/1 is still: X, Y, Z /CODEX RESCRIPTUS This binding/volume used to hold MS 28/2 and MS 32 also; they were extracted between 1880 and 1886: it now contains only the pages that had no early (?5-6th century) Biblical text, but still contains some (29 leaves; three of which have an early (?9th cent) text of Gregory Nazianzenus sermons 7 and 18,) which were palimpsested in the ?thirteenth century. The Nazianzenus sermon fragments are listed in Justin Mossay, Repertorium Nazianzenum [III] Orationes. Textus graecus 3 Codices Belgii, … Hiberniae (Paderborn: Ferdinand Schöningh 1993) p 178 (no 217) as being in TCD MS 28/1 and being as follows: 6v, 7r-v (formerly 14v, 15r-v) [sermon] 7 from the words ó tés megalopsuchias… (=§ 20: PG 35, col 781 B 2 up to the end with a lacuna before the words dóréthenta para to eikos (=§ 25: col 788 A 13) and with much that I [?Justin Mossay] could not make out with natural light; fol 8r-v (formerly 16r-v) [sermon] 18 from the words … Sabbaton aidoumenoi … as far as the words … thaumazein [de pleon] (= § 5-8: PG 35, col 992 A 1 - 995 B 13) The (?thirteenth century) texts remaining in MS 28/1 have not been specifically distinguished here from those on the Biblical palimpsested pages that were removed from it but the composite pre-1880 manuscript contained (according to TK Abbott) the following Greek texts: St Chrysostom de sacerdotio (fragment): fol ... Theodorus Abucara, opuscula quaedam: fol 10 Epiphanius, excerpts from his writings: fol 58v St Chrysostom fragments: fol 60 St Basil fragments: fol 60 Temporum sup...tatio a creatione ad A D 848: fol 66 Hippolytus Thebanus, fragments from a chronological work: fol 66v Hippolytus Thebanus, De cognatione inter Mariam Virginem et Mariam Cleopae: fol 72v Hippolytus Thebanus, De genealogia Christi et Johannis: fol 73v De muliere fluxu sanguinis laborante: fol 74v Anastasius monachus de Ephod: fol 76 Abgar, De epistola Abgari ex Eusebii Historia: fol 77 Anastasius presbiter, Interpretatio festorum: fol 82v; read on from fol 84v to fol 89 De Abramo et Melchizedek fragmenta: fol 85 Symbolum orthodoxae fidei: fol 85v + fol 81; after fol 88v read fol 80 Maximus, Mystagoga ecclesiastica: fol 91 [?For reading these last texts, read in order as follows: 77-79v Abgar; 82v-84v Anastasius; 89r-90v Anastasius; 85r De Abramo et M; 85v Symbolum Orthodoxae Fidei; 81r-82r SOF; 86r-88r ???SOF; 88v SOF; 80r-v SOF; 91r- Maximus] 69 fols (refoliated 1886 after removal of some leaves of palimpsest).
