IE TCD MS 11290 is a collection of letters written by Henry Crookshank (1893-1972) to members of his family during World War I, whilst stationed in the Middle East.

  • IE TCD MS 11290 is a collection of letters written by Henry Crookshank (1893-1972) to members of his family during World War I, whilst stationed in the Middle East.Henry was the second son of Charles Henry Crookshank (1859-1927) and Henrietta Elizabeth Stokes (1867-c.1945). Henry attended St. Columba’s College, and later Trinity College Dublin where he studied Mathematics, which he departed from in order to serve with the Dublin Fusiliers in the First World War. In 1918 he returned to Trinity to read Engineeering; in 1920 he travelled to India as part of a geological survey team, and published his 'Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India' in 1936. He became the Director of the Geological Survey of Pakistan around 1948. He married Eileen Mary ‘Kitty’ Somervil-Lodge (born 1896, Eastbourne, Sussex) in Calcutta in 1921 and they went on to have three daughters: Elizabeth (1922-2015), Anne (1927-2016), and Helen (1932- ). Anne became Professor Emeritus of History of Art in Trinity College, Dublin, a department she established in 1966.
