Abstract
  • IE TCD MS 4388, John Millington Synge's literary commonplace book. This is a working notebook, previously numbered 25, in which Synge entered drafts of poems for Vita Vecchia in numbered order (fols 38v-48v), besides other early poems including Prelude, fol 3r; The creed, fol 4r; Epitaph, fol 5r; Allegorie (L'Échange) fol 31r; Execreation fol 47v; In the city again fol 46 v; The fugitive fol 44v; The conviction fol 41v; In rebellion fol 40v. A draft of 'Danny' however (fol 34v), suggests that Synge may have used the notebook again as late as 1907 when he also probably tore out several pages containing other early poems. 50 folios in all, with folio 50rv being the back cover.
