Abstract
  • One of the first collections of Lutheran hymns, published in Erfurt in 1524 in two competing editions by Matthes Maler (zcum Schwartzen Hornn) and Johannes Loersfeld (zum Ferbefass). The Maler edition contains 24 hymns with 15 notated melodies, as well as the Apostle’s Creed in German and an anonymous preface. Seventeen of the hymns are by Martin Luther, with others by Paul Speratus, Elisabeth Cruciger, Justus Jonas, and Erhart Hegenwald. The Loersfeld edition has one additional hymn and also includes the melody for Luther’s psalm paraphrase ‘Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir’. [47] p. ; 14.2 cm. Imperfect: lacks leaf D4; D2 and E2 torn, lacking text.A facsimile of this book was published in Erfurt in 1848, from a copy in the City Library in Strasbourg which was subsequently destroyed by fire in August 1870. No other copy of the original print is known to survive.
