  • A Wicklow tramp wearing a tattered dark coat, felt hat and patched trousers. He is standing on the roadside against a bank holding a sack over his left shoulder and a stick in his right hand. This man may be the old sailor described by Synge in his essay ‘The Vagrants of Wicklow’.Description based on information found in My wallet of photographs: the collected photographs of J. M. Synge, arranged and introduced by Lilo Stephens (Dublin: Dolmen Editions, 1971).Date: approximately 1898-early 1900s.
