Abstract
  • IE TCD MS 98, a Canterbury Pontifical, with neums on parchment. Comprises 155 leaves, foliated up to 107 in arabic and thereafter in roman by a 16 century annotator whose notes sometimes cross-reference with folio numbers (e.g. on 37); the 16 century foliation, designating the final leaf as clvii, includes a leaf now missing after 61v, and jumps from 73 to 75. Measures 263mm x 170mm (170mm x 96mm). 22 lines. Ruling by hard point. Quires numbered. i-vii8 viii8 (lacks 6) ix8 (lacks 7)+2 x-xii8 xiii4 xiv-xix8 xx8 (lacks 8). 1-72v and 73-155v were bound together at an early date, but that 73-155v were originally separate is evident from the fact that quire number ii stands on 88v, also iii on 108v, vii on 132v, viii on 140v. The MS is in several hands and the addition as above. Initials in red, green, purple, or blue; capitals marked with red. 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th century corrections; 13th, 15th, and 16th century notes. A 12th century hand, using pencil, frequently wrote 'scribe' in the Benedictional as direction where a new blessing begins. Binding style 2. 2nd fo.: sancta uirgo. Decoration: Initials red, green, purple, or blue; capitals marked with red. 12th-,13th-, 15th-, and 16th-century corrections; 13th-, 15th-, and 16th-century notes. A 12th-century hand using pencil frequently wrote ‘scribe’ in the Benedictional as direction where a new blessing begins.
