Abstract
  • Image located in the collections of: TCD EPB V.k.74 ; PLIr ; UCD SC.Sandys was governor of the Prevot Prison in the Royal Barracks, Dublin, an institution frequently condemned throughout the IM. In late 1798 he arrested one Purcell and his son, of Stoneybatter, and had them flogged, attempting to make each inform on the other in turn. But he was unsuccessful, as “nature, and honour and religion' triumphed over the demon”. The skilful execution of the image results once again in graphic cruelty. Note the black whipper.
