Abstract
  • Image located in the collections of: TCD EPB V.k.76 ; NLI T ; NGI 11,24 ;PLIr ; RIA RR ; UCD SC.The famous duel between Daniel O’Connell and John D'Esterre took place on 1 February 1815 at Bishop’s Court, co. Kildare. Following O’Connell’s public derision of Dublin Corporation as a “beggarly corporation”, D’Esterre, a member but also an experienced duellist, challenged him. Unexpectedly, O'Connell fatally wounded D'Esterre. The IM, with its usual phraseology, took pride of its “engraving of Mr. O'Connell Shooting an Orange chieftain, which we humbly dedicate to the Children of the massacred people of Shercock as the first act of public justice that has yet been inflicted on the murdering association.”
