[1636] Contemporary copy., signed by Thomas Little.“The humble petition [to the Lords of the Council] of John Smyth, William Hamilton, William Bridges, John Cunman, and other the inhabitants of the town and corporation of Downe Patrick.”They state that his majesty has sent his letters to their lordship for a restoration of the ancient rights of their corporation against viscount Lecale. They showed him and order for granting same on 23 February. They were offered composition through their agent Peter Hull, but he refused it. Their predecessors have paid £5.6.8 to his majesty yearly. They are now content to give a good increase of rent to his majesty and have built their walls and fort. Endorsed: “Townsman of Downe at council board 1636, wherein they confessed they have refused composition as Bryck says propounded by Peter Hill from the Lo. Cromwell and that Bryck is a party.”
