  • ‘Threshing on Aran’ [Inis Mór]. A young island boy in ragged homespun trousers beats a sheaf of corn against upright stones. Rye was grown on the islands primarily for straw. After threshing a flail was used to remove all traces of grain which might later sprout in the thatch. Description based on information found in My wallet of photographs: the collected photographs of J. M. Synge, arranged and introduced by Lilo Stephens (Dublin: Dolmen Editions, 1971).Date: approximately 1898-early 1900s.
