  • IE TCD MS 503, Chronicula, is a history in Latin by John of Worcester, a monk and chronicler, created sometime between 1140 and 1199.--Folios 1v-151v: Iohannes Wigorniensis, Chronicula (with introductory matter), based on his Chronicarum Chronica which had formerly been attributed to Florence of Worcester.--Folios 1v-14v. Genealogy of the English kings.--Folio 15. Genealogy of the French kings.--Folio 16. Genealogy of the dukes of Normandy.--Folios 16v-36v. Lists of higher clergy and disciples of Christ, sometimes with brief comments. The chronicle proper begins with (37rv) geography of Britain and (37v-38) story of Brutus. These two sections are followed by general history from Octavian (A.D. 42), with rather strong attention to Worcester from 51v .Script in several hands: written in a characteristic Worcester hand after 1139, but the main text to part of the entry for 1123 was written by John of Worcester himself, then another hand continued to 1125; afterward the chronicle was continued by still another hand to 1141. Initials red, capitals marked with red. Variants by scribe (151v); 12th- or 13th-century corrections; 15th- and 16th-century notes. Binding executed for the College about 1830 in blind-tooled leather. Please see the Manuscripts & Archives Research Library’s catalogue entry for the manuscript here:
