Abstract
  • No. 26, pages 113-116. 17 June 1652. Original. Bond of Thomas Viscount Cromwell of Lecale, Earl of Ardglass, in £1,000 to Henry Leslie Bishop of Down, 17 June 1652.Whereas differences have arisen between them, they have referred to Dr. Allexander Collbill and Mr. Henry Maxwell, and then to Col. Arthur Hill. Witnesses: B.A. Wark, Arthur Stoughton. Note by JCW: Henry Leslie was Dean of Down 1627-1635. He then became Bishop of the diocese. He left Down following the rebellion of October 1641, but returned to Ireland in the early 1650’s and was one of only four Irish Bishops that remained at their posts during the commonwealth period. Early in 1661 he was translated to Meath, but died soon after.
