Cromwell: family and estate papers. Item 24

Abstract
  • No. 24, pages 101-104. Dublin Castle, 11 August 1640. Original, in two hands . Endorsed by Chr. Wandesforde, the humble petition of William Coote Dean of Down, contrary to the Lord Lieutenant’s order. Complains that he is wronged in his titles by the Bishop of Derry and Lord Cromwell. Cromwell’s answer follows, refuting the Dean’s right to the tithes. Note by JCW: William Coote became Dean of Down in 1635; he was still Dean in 1640. He was brother of Sir Charles Coote, 1st bart, ancestor of the Earls of Mountrath, Bellamont etc.
